Thermomass | UK & Ireland

Announcement | CSM

After 21 years servicing the local concrete sandwich panel market, CSM-UK, sole distributors of our Thermomass range in the UK and Ireland, ceased trading on 17th December 2021 due to retirement. We are pleased to announce that Leviat will now offer our Thermomass connector systems and associated calculation services direct in this market. Sales support will include structural services for connectors and the full impartial thermal evaluations CSM previously provided as part of their offering.

The Thermomass System from Leviat is one of the most tested sandwich panel connector systems in the world, with over 90 million square metres supplied globally and is used in factory-manufactured precast concrete and site-cast projects.

The Thermomass System comprises innovative fibre-composite connectors and rigid thermal insulation to create a thermally-broken building envelope. Facilities insulated with Thermomass products are quiet, safe, virtually maintenance-free and completely fire-resistant. Heating and cooling costs are greatly reduced due to the thermal storage capacity of the concrete and over 99% of the insulation value is maintained.

As part of the Thermomass System, Leviat provides customers with technical support including thermal calculation services, connector design, façade design advice and detailing services.

System NC (Non-Composite)

Thermomass System NC (Non-Composite) is the most widely used Thermomass connector and insulation system. Over the past 35 years, System NC has been used in more than 9 million square metres of factory-manufactured precast and site-cast construction worldwide.

Designed to create a non-composite insulated concrete sandwich wall, the system ties two layers of concrete together yet allows them to work independently of one another. This eliminates the thermal bowing present in structurally composite panels and provides a wall system that is not affected by significant temperature differentials between the interior space and the outdoor environment.

The two main components of the system are the Thermomass MC, MS, MMC, Star and X Series fibre-composite connectors and specific rigid thermal insulation. These connectors are installed through pre-determined holes in the rigid insulation, providing a grid of connectors across the body of the panel.

Leviat also produces threaded connectors – the Thermomass MS-T Series – that can be easily drilled into rigid insulation without the use of pre-punched insulation sheets.

System SC (Semi-Composite)

Thermomass System SC (Semi-Composite) optimises insulation coverage and composite action, providing designers with the highest level of insulation value in a composite panel.

System SC is a patented insulation system designed to create a structurally-composite concrete sandwich wall in both factory-manufactured precast and site-cast applications. The system is unique in that it forces the two layers of concrete to act together structurally, creating a thinner panel.

The two main components of the system are Thermomass CC and X Series fibre-composite connectors and specific rigid thermal insulation. These connectors are installed through pre-determined slots in the rigid insulation, providing a grid of connectors across the body of the panel; this behaves like a Vierendeel truss to resist the loads imposed upon the panel without sacrificing insulation coverage.

System DW (Double Wall)

Thermomass System DW (Double Wall) is a patented insulation system designed to create a precast concrete double wall. Much like a traditional precast sandwich wall panel, double walls incorporate a highly efficient layer of specific rigid insulation into the wall assembly, providing the concrete with improved thermal efficiency and moisture prevention.

System DW was developed for the European double wall market. With its lightweight design, it is a popular choice for residential and commercial structures reducing the transportation cost of panels.

Precast walls utilising Thermomass System DW are constructed with two layers of concrete held together with Thermomass Series AG and Star Rocket (ST12R4) connectors, allowing the insulation to be secured to one layer of concrete while also providing an air gap between the insulation and the second layer of concrete. Once the panels are delivered to site and erected into place, the void is filled with grout, creating a monolithic connection between the wall panels.

System CIP (Cast-in-Place)

Thermomass System CIP (Cast-in-Place) is a patented insulation system developed to create an integrally insulated cast-in-place concrete wall. When cast into a concrete wall, integral insulation allows the layers of concrete to be left exposed or finished in a variety of methods.

The system is unique in that it allows a concrete contractor to incorporate a layer of insulation into a vertically cast concrete wall using traditional forming equipment and construction practices.

System CIP generally utilises either Thermomass SL Series or TL Series connectors and specific rigid thermal insulation that not only tie the two layers of concrete together, but also act as a positioning device for the insulation. This system allows the designer the flexibility to have varying thicknesses of concrete on the interior and exterior wall.

System MP (Modular Precast)

Thermomass System MP (Modular Precast) is a patented insulation system designed for modular factory precast applications, allowing a designer or contractor to build a facility room-by-room with quality controlled concrete units.

Modular plant precast construction is ideal large-scale construction, such as for hotels, schools, prisons, flats, and halls of residence. The Thermomass system is the only full system for modular precast construction in the world.

System MP features Thermomass TL Series connectors and specific rigid thermal insulation. The length of the TL Series connector is designed to be the same as the thickness of the wall and are keyed so that when inserted into the TL Series spools, the insulation will be positioned at the desired location within the exterior wall.
